Lane first worked with clay as a high school senior. With Eric Kaufmann as his mentor and ceramics teacher, Lane grew increasingly attached to clay as a medium and a way of life. While still in high school, Lane became a studio assistant for Dick Lehman in Goshen, IN, furthering his love and knowledge of pottery, especially wood-fired ceramics.
While studying at Goshen College, Lane continued to work with Dick Lehman and learn from art professors Merrill Krabill and John Mishler. While experimenting with a variety of forms, Lane was drawn to functional work with an organic quality. He continued to expand his experience with wood-firing as well. Following college, Lane moved to Asheville, North Carolina, and was fortunate to have the opportunity to work as a studio assistant for several potters, including Eileen and Marty Black and Margorie Pittman. Lane also helped to set up a community studio and taught classes at the Black Mountain Center for the Arts in Black Mountain, NC. Lane found he enjoyed talking about and teaching ceramics almost as much as he enjoyed the actual creation process. In 2010, while living and teaching English in Korea, Lane worked with Korean potter Yoon Bum-Suk. Despite language barriers, Lane learned much from his host. Lane just finished a year long residency at the Cub Creek Foundation under the direction of John Jessiman. Lane was able to produce a large body of work while continuing to find his own voice in the ceramic world. John is a great mentor and friend. Lane is currently an MFA candidate at Michigan State University. |
